The Devils Slide Trail, operated by San Mateo County Parks, is actually a 1.3 mile piece of old California 1, closed a number of years ago when tunnels bypassed it. I was a dangerous stretch of road , often closed by rock slides. When it was by-passed, San Mateo County took it over and operates it as a park. It is a great place for bird watching, viewing wildlife, and wild flowers. Merre and I were there just a couple of days ago. Here are some pics.
Along the way you see the rusted remains of a watchtower which was once part of the coastal defense system in WWII. Guns were in place and watchers could direct fire at enemy ships seeking to invade. A unit of women flyers were stationed at nearby Half Moon Bay airfield who flew planes towing targets for gunnery practice
.We chose to walk the trail on the hottest day of the year so far., well into the 80’s and even as high as 97 in some nearby spots. Today we have a little rain and it has cooled quite a bit. Butano is booked up for the weeken d again so we’ll be busy. I’ll post again next week sometime.
And so it goes…How are you spending your spring?
